Timeflow vs Clio

Last updated: September 2026  ·  By TimeFlow Legal Inc.

Clio is the most widely used practice management platform for small and mid-sized firms. It handles matters, documents, calendaring, intake, billing and payments. Time tracking is one feature among dozens.

Timeflow does one thing: it makes sure the time you worked actually reaches the invoice.

If you are choosing between them, the honest answer is that they are not the same category of product. This page explains where each one fits.

The short version

Choose Clio if you need one system for your whole practice, including documents, calendaring, client intake and trust accounting, and you are comfortable starting timers or writing up your day at the end of it.

Choose Timeflow if the thing costing you money is not case management, it is unrecorded time. Timeflow watches your active application and window titles, splits your day into segments, matches them to matters, and hands you draft entries to approve.

Use both if you are already on Clio and happy with it. Timeflow works well alongside Clio: it is a standalone program that does not require you to leave, and you export your approved entries and bring them into Clio. Firms running both are making sure every billable makes it onto the invoice.

The real difference is when the record gets made

Clio's timekeeping assumes you will tell it what you did. You start a timer, or you sit down at 6pm and reconstruct the day.

Both fail the same way. Timers get forgotten during a call that runs long. Reconstruction misses the draft in Word, the PDF you opened outside Clio, the research in your browser between two other things. Those are small individually and material over a month.

Timeflow inverts it. The record is built while you work. At the end of the day you are editing something that already exists rather than remembering something that has gone.

What about Clio Duo?

Clio Duo is Clio's AI layer, and it does surface time entry suggestions. Two things to check before assuming it solves this:

  1. It is available on Clio's higher tiers. Confirm current bundling and pricing with Clio directly.
  2. Suggestions are not the same as capture. Duo works from what Clio already knows about: calendar entries, emails, documents in Clio. Work that happens outside Clio is not in the record to begin with.

Timeflow captures at the operating system level, so drafting in Word or reviewing a PDF outside Clio still becomes a segment.

Timeflow is not practice management software

Stated plainly, because you will find this out anyway:

  • No document management, calendaring, or client intake.
  • No trust accounting.
  • Desktop only. There is no mobile time entry app.

That is by design. Timeflow does one job, and it works alongside whatever practice management system you already run.

Privacy, since it comes up first

Timeflow reads application names and window titles. It is not a keylogger and does not record your screen. Nothing is billed or synced without you approving it. Given what sits in a lawyer's window titles, that distinction matters, and it is why the product is built the way it is.

FAQ

Does Clio track time automatically?

Clio's core time tracking is manual: timers and manual entry. Clio Duo, available on higher tiers, generates suggestions from activity already inside Clio. Neither passively captures work happening in other applications.

Can I use Timeflow with Clio?

Yes. Timeflow is a standalone program, so it does not require Clio, and it works alongside it: you export your approved time entries and bring them into Clio.

Is Timeflow cheaper than Clio?

They price for different things. Clio replaces several systems; Timeflow replaces the part of your day spent reconstructing time. Compare Timeflow against the billable time you currently lose, not against Clio's licence fee.

Is Timeflow a Clio replacement?

No. Timeflow is not practice management software. It replaces the part of your day spent reconstructing time, and it works alongside Clio through time-entry export. If your firm has no practice management system at all, Timeflow can still take approved entries through to an invoice.

Where Timeflow fits

Timeflow is built for solo, small and medium firms that want passive capture with a guided daily review. Keep Clio for practice management and let Timeflow make sure the time gets recorded.
